It is a fact that many of these fitness gyms have provided training facilities that have changed many people’s lives and that’s awesome… But I feel that most people who use the gyms and fitness centres could have gotten a better deal.
Having been a former fitness centre personal trainer, I’ve seen the lies, the secrets, the tricks and dirty underhanded tactics that these fitness centres and gyms used to take advantage of people and it disgusts me… I couldn’t work there anymore and now I feel compel to let the truth out…
Seriously, I’m very likely to make quite a few enemies by writing this report because some of the things you will be reading here is very “hush-hush” kind of stuff especially around Perth. I’ve decided to do this so that the ball is in your court when you’re ready to get in shape and I figure that if I can help just one person I will do it.
Perth Health Club Dirty Secret No. 1 -
They hard sell you into signing up for a gym membership and hope you don’t come in and do your work out after that…
These Perth health clubs count on the fact that 80-90% of the people who sign up for gym membership will never step foot into the facility beyond maybe 1 to 3 months per year. Why?
Have a look at the size of the gym and think about what happen if every single gym members turn up for a workout. It would chaotic and the relevant authority would come in and close the gym down due to overcrowding reasons.
Everyone knows for a fact that the fitness centres and health clubs in Nedlands and Perth are supercrowded in January to March or April. Hey it’s the New Year Resolution that everyone have and it’s the summer. I remembered I was training one of my clients in those gyms and we were struggling to find one available piece of training equipment. The gym staff knows that you will disappear by March with near certainty and they count on you to do that so that everything can go back to normal in the clubs.
And if you haven’t drop out of the gym by March, they will be certain you’re out by the time winter kicks in. Check out the gym in the winter and you will know what I mean.
Bottomline… Perth health clubs and gyms want you to sign up and not workout.

They hope and know you will not read the small prints…
Before you sign a contract to join a health club or fitness centres in Perth, please do yourself a favour and read the contract thoroughly. You do not want to be caught in a situation whereby you find it hard to quit. If you read some of the stuff in the contract, you’ll probably think twice about joining.
In terms of contract, many health clubs are very sneaky with it and very often you end up with a suave salesman who is trying to hit his quota. He will hard sell you and rush you into signing the contract and before you know, you are logged into the gym membership for a year with a penalty to pay if you quit within the year.

Perth Health Club Dirty Secret No. 5 – Many of the Perth personal fitness trainers in these health clubs have no idea what they’re doing or how to reach your fitness goals…
The sad truth is not all personal trainers are equal and many of the health club fitness trainers don’t know what it takes to get people in shape.
Basically, there are no types of personal trainers in Perth Health Clubs:
Perth Health Club Problem #1 – The truth is most fitness clubs will hire just about anyone who has a Cert IV to be a trainer. I would not argue the fact that anyone who has a personal trainer Cert IV qualification is equipped with knowledge to be a personal trainer.
Did you know that some of these Perth Health Clubs have quotas for number of trainers they need to have onboard so that they can make more money besides to the massive gym membership fee they are collecting from month to month? The fact is trainers who applied for the “personal trainer position” in these clubs are actually paying to have a job. First, they have to pay something like ONE GRAND for franchise fee upfront and AU$250-AU$300 per week of rent to use the facilities to train their clients provided they have anyone to start with. Secondly, they are locked into a 1 year contract that would make it almost impossible to get out of the situation. Think about it? It is a lot of money for one personal trainer a year. The health clubs would care less about the quality of the trainers and be happy to have as many as of them onboard. It is a no brainer for them, there is no salary to pay for trainers to do gym duty and still get paid having them as the “in-house trainers”.
Then fitness clubs will conduct some sort of induction crash course for these “newbie” trainers and teach them all kind of sales strategies and talk you into training with them after they graduated. The worst part is you get the same workout from all these trainers because they were taught a standard format of workout routine. Just asked some of your mates who had used them, doing the same routine all over again is one of the biggest complain you hear.
Perth Health Club Problem #2 – You have the other type of trainers who are genetic workout freaks. Hey look these personal trainers actually have interest in exercise but the only problem is since they’re genetically gifted everything they tried when it comes to getting into shape works for them. They could literally pull out a workout program from a magazine and used it and just get into shape like that even without proper eating habits…
The truth is… Not everybody is a genetic gifted workout freak that could get in shape just like that. The problem is for most people, they need properly structured exercise programs, proper exercise techniques and sensible eating plans to realize their fitness goals. Many people could hardly get any RESULTS with the shot-gun approach used by genetic freak.
The biggest complaint you get about these trainers is that they spend more time checking themselves in the mirror than training you effectively. The most hilarious thing I’ve even seen was one bodybuilder trainer loading his back squat to the max like 150kg in front of the mirror just to show his small lady client how to squat. Does he need to go to that extend? I thought for demonstration a barbell will do.
Now don’t get me wrong, I like what personal training has done for people. It changes people’s lives. With the right kind of training approaches, I’ve personally seen a fat woman literally changed her body shape overnight and became a personal trainer herself, I’ve seen a overweight man who was bouncing from one diet to another completely changed his body losing his gut and another University student fit into her skinny jeans literally overnight which she can’t get in before.
I don’t think personal training per say is a problem; the problem is large number of Perth health clubs hire the wrong types of trainers. I’ve seen it all as I used to work in one of these places. I saw people who train with the same trainer for the whole year stay in the same shape. I was disgusted and feel that it is not acceptable…
I finally got fed up and took the courage and leave the club and build my business up in delivering real results with no empty promises…
